The neighborhood of Matareya surrounds the Tree of Mary, which is located at a well that the holy family drank from on their trip through Egypt.
In drawings from 100 years ago the tree was lush, and large surrounded by gardens and cared for Franciscan monks. Now a wall separates it from the neighborhood and the tree has died. But another tree has been planted around the old wood, and people still ignore the rules, breaking off a few leaves and rubbing the sap against their sores, or spiriting them away in their handbags.
There is a street behind the tree where it is said that the holy family first asked for shelter, but the farm owner refused and the land was cursed. So till today no one on that street can have a baby.
